curriculum vitae

background
For 23 years I worked as a graphic designer. I had my own graphic design firm since 1984, working for a wide variety of clients, large and small, corporate and non-profit. After many years working in this capacity, in front of a computer most of the time, the need arose to express my creativity in a more visceral, hands-on way. Mosaics and tile-making became the perfect outlet for me.

statement
I was drawn to the ancient art of mosaic gradually over many years. I have been inspired by Antoni Gaudí’s work in Barcelona, and hand painted and relief tiles of the California potteries from the early 1900’s. Travels to Italy and Turkey have also deepened my love and awe for the work of ancient mosaicists.
In 1996, I became interested in the “picassiette” style of mosaics. As I did a few projects using broken shards of pottery, china and tile, I began thinking about making my own tile. Soon my husband and I created a ceramic studio out of our garage, and I began handbuilding tiles to incorporate into the work. Next came the inclusion of vitreous glass, stone and smalti.
I strive to make art and architectural installations that bring color, texture and excitement wherever the work is hung or installed.
