the mosaic

the photo that inspired the mosaic

Bosphorus Dockside

I went on a ceramics excursion to Turkey in 2005 with some North American artists. We took a trip down the Bosphorus, and this piece was inspired by a photo of a warn, algae-growing dock our ferry pulled into. Zooming in with my telephoto lens, I captured a detail that made a stunning abstract landscape. While framing it in the viewfinder, I immediately knew I wanted to make a mosaic of the image. It was a perfect subject for mixed media, and I was able to implement a new clay technique I learned from an artist on that same trip.

This piece was accepted into Mosaic Art International 2007, a juried show by the Society of American Mosaic Artists. I am additionally honored to have received a Juror's Choice Award for this piece! You can see all the winners on the SAMA website.

The exhibition will be held March 20 – April 29 at Mesa Contemporary Arts at the Mesa, Arizona Art Center.

Handmade tiles, rusted metal, stone, smalti, wood, handmade felt.

This piece measures 13" x 9.5".
